skill development Self-expression · Concentration · Learning
skills · Proper posture · Organizing
thoughts · Friendships with others throughout
the region
Weekly rehearsals are fun and energetic while providing
girls with a forum to gain leadership skills, including building
teamwork, enhancing responsibility, and instilling pride in a job
well done
Instruction in music reading,
vocal performance skills and proper vocal projection to create
a beautiful, vital, healthy sound. We
specialize in instruction which develops the child's singing voice,
while protecting it!
Costs less than private voice lessons
Training
includes vocal technique,
musicianship (sightsinging and ear training using Kodály "solfege"),
and performance experience. University-trained, professional instructors
utilize the music being learned to teach and remind the children
of the basic elements of musicianship. The choir was honored with
participation in the prestigious International
Musical Eisteddfod in Llangollen, Wales (earning 4th
in the world in 1995), the Bournemouth Competitions Festival in
England (where they placed first in the folksong competition) and
in the 1998 International Music Festival in Cantonigros near
Barcelona, Spain, competing with choirs from Russia, Eastern & Western
Europe, Scandinavia and the United States, our Young Women's Ensemble
won Grand Prize Gold Medal and our combined boys & girls choirs
placed 2nd in the world.
Other awards include the Gold Award for
choral excellence in the Los Angeles Choral Festival (Heritage Festival).
Locally, the combined boys and girls
concert choir has performed with and under the auspices of major
orchestras such as the Seattle Symphony, Orchestra Seattle, Northwest
Chamber Orchestra, and with other choirs such as Seattle Chamber
Singers and Bellevue Chamber Chorus. Members of Columbia Choirs
have also sung as soloists and choristers for Seattle Opera and
various churches in the region. Regionally, the choir also performs
for conventions, civic groups, municipal functions and unique events
such as the Christmas Ship Cruises. Summer activities include concert
touring and "MusiCamp" (a
weekend retreat held near Poulsbo, WA).
